In August 2007 the Black Pig, Pub & Dining Room opened its doors in the heart of Tunbridge Wells. The second venture for Julian Leefe-Griffiths, owner of the double Michelin Bib Gourmand winning George & Dragon, Speldhurst, he wanted create a place where you can get great, simple food in smart, relaxed surrounding. Being a regular punter at many London Gastropubs, Julian saw how this concept could be translated to the commuter town of Tunbridge Wells he says ‘relaxed dining but still with really good food, isn’t that what everyone wants? But where to go?’
Sticking to his beliefs that food should be seasonal, local if possible, simple and tasty he along with an enthusiast team of chefs created a menu that utilised the best of Kent & Sussex produce. Chose from warming Venison stews and roasted pheasant in the winter, Ashdown Forest wild mushroom risotto in autumn and fresh asparagus with hollandaise in the summer. Fresh bread is baked on site twice a day and everything from the chutney to the pickled onions are homemade. All meat is reared locally and organically and fish is from sustainable stocks.
Wines have been carefully selected to provide a good range of well priced, interesting wines, the odd English one and there may on occasion be one obscure but totally delicious wine but as a rule it is a very accessible list. Plenty are served by the glass so if you want a relaxing glass of sauvignon blanc after work or a glass of Rioja to go with your Spanish charcuterie selection all are catered for. However if you are a beer drinker you will not be left out with the reliably good Harveys Best on draft and a selection of continental lagers.
Weather you are after a pie & a pint or three courses and a bottle of Gevery- Chambertin we do both, so to sum it all up what we are trying to do is good, organic food, full of flavour in a relaxed environment.
